手机账单问题

Today, I found my family cell phone bill increased $50. I looked into it and found that one of the phones received 48 messages and was charged $50+!
Why is like that? If it is 0.2 / message, 48 message should cost $9.6. I then called the verizonwireless and found out the following:

Above 4 commercial companies charged us $9.99/month and also sent messages to us daily!

How could that happen? The representative explained to me that somehow, this cellphone number was obtained by  the commercial companies and they started sending the message every day. No matter what you do, you read the message or not, you will be charged $9.99/month! I was advised to call each of these companies and ask them to remove my number and give me the refund.

The representative knew everything about it. I asked her, why does Verizon allowed this to happen? Why couldn't they send a warning message to the user about it?She said, they can not do it.

Please check your phone bill each month to make sure it won't happen to you!
