Thank you for your inquiry. I am not just an Orthokeratologist and optometrist, I am also a father of two Ortho-K patients (Both my daughter and son are wearing Orhto-K lenses). If OrthoK lenes carry any risk for eye infection, I would not like my children to wear them. A few years ago, my daughter's prescription doubled twice in two years and I did not know much about OrthoK myself. After finished training and certification with OrthoK procedure, I started my first OrthoK treatment on my daughter asap. A few years later, her prescription did not change at all and her vision has been 20/20. She has been doing dancing, sports and other activities without having to wearing glasses and contact lens.
To answer your question, OrthoK lenses, when properly fit on eyes, will not cause eye infection. That way orthok requires more years of experience/training for the doctor to design good fitting lenses. Poorly fitted OrthoK lenses need to be corrected and re-designed to avoid eye irritation. That why orthok procedure requires many follow-up visits to make sure OK lenses are fitted well on the eyes.
OrthoK will slow down or even stop myopia progression for sure. There are many research studies so far and results are very consistent. Some of the results are quoted on my website: www.drzhangeyecare.com
There are a few OrthoK designs on the market, CRT, GOV, Contex and wave, just to name a few I am licensed to design and use for my patients. Among those lenses, Wave is so far the most accurate and best lenses when they are applicable.
Let me know if you have more question or call my office to schedule a consultation.
Take care,
